A book you hate but love at the same time.
Oh, Belinda. So mature for her age.
Here is the thing about Belinda. I loved reading it. It was steamy, well written, and I enjoyed the storyline in general. I read this back in High School when I was close to Belinda’s age (sixteen), and I could relate to the character on a few levels. Wonderful book, deep characters, enjoyable read.
Now you may be wondering why I say I hate this book. Hate is a very strong word. It isn’t the book I hate. What perturbs me about it, is Belinda is sixteen and sexually involved with a forty-four year old man who paints her in the nude!
I can look past an age difference most certainly, but I do feel that this book kind of glorifies sexual relationships with minors with a major age gap. Would it keep me from reading it again? No.
As I said, I loved Belinda. It may be a bit darker and somewhat unusual, but I can’t really recall a moment where I thought it was outright perverse. I do, however, think it pushed at my comfort zone a little, which is why I made this my Day 12 book.
I wish I could better explain, but this is all I can do. I still own the same copy of Belinda from years ago. Anne Rice is and always will be an amazing author.
I should add one more detail. You can tell that the characters are completely in love. That may not be enough for you, but it was enough for me. 🙂
